Google Analytics, which is used on millions of sites worldwide to show web publishers who is visiting their sites, today published its first report on Web traffic. Among other interesting tidbits was the above chart showing Windows losing a staggering 5.1% of its market year over year. At the same time, the Mac OS actually gained almost a percentage point of the market. But the groundswell was in the “Other” category which includes iPads, iPhones, Android and other non-Mac/Windows/Linux machines....
The Google app on iOS has today been updated to version 18.0, expanding support for 3D Touch on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. While the app first gained support for 3D Touch back in December, today’s update brings the feature to more aspects of the app. Google says that deep pressing on search result titles and map results will now offer a preview of what is on the linked page....

The December update began rolling out on December 6, but Google says some customers reported their calls were being dropped or disconnected. The December update was initially slated to include a range of fixes and improvements, including a fix for an issue causing the Google Assistant to unintentionally start a phone call in certain conditions. Customers that already received the December software update and are still dealing with dropped calls will have to use the Android Flash Tool and perform a factory reset to revert to the previous software version....

Recently, a new one was discovered within the Google app on iOS that lets you play a pinball/brick breaker game. Yesterday Google updated the way their navigation bar works across some of their services. They’ve streamlined the link tabs on the left side of the bar, and on the right-side there is a new gear button that provides a new drop-menu feature. Have you seen it yet? Netflix unveils a new, first look image from their forthcoming Ghost In The Shell anime series. Marketing for Godzilla: King of the Monsters may have revealed the film’s secret villains. Though King Ghidorah is of course Godzilla’s primary adversary, it’s a group of eco-terrorists who may actually be pulling the strings and causing the monsters to fight. In the highly anticipated sequel to 2014’s Godzilla, the alpha predator will have his hands full with the emergence of three more kaiju: King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra. Today Google has sent out mail to 100,000 of the most popular businesses currently listed in the Google Business Center. Business owners who didn’t automatically receive a sticker can apply for one, but Google will have to determine if the business is eligible to receive it. So far Google’s selection of a business to receive the sticker has been based upon popularity. However, a business Must be signed up and listed with correct information in the Local Business Center to qualify....

Last month, the US Department of Commerce added NSO Group to its “entity list”, largely banning it from US markets due to evidence it supplied spyware to foreign governments that used it to target government officials, journalists, business people, activists, academics, and embassy workers. In late November, Apple filed for a permanent injunction banning NSO from using any of its software, services or devices. Now Google’s Project Zero (GPZ) has analyzed a relatively new NSO ‘zero-click’ exploit for iOS 14....
Google Currents was meant to improve office water cool chats by connecting superiors with subordinates. It also served as a replacement to Google+, the unpopular social network it shut down in 2018. Google will begin to “wind down” Currents in 2023 and move users’ content over to Spaces. It hasn’t specified an exact timeline for Currents’ end of life, but says it will beef up Spaces in the meantime. After appearing in a developer build of Chrome last month, Google announced today that this week it will be rolling out Google Now notifications to the desktop through the latest beta version of Chrome. Google Now notifications were previously available to Android and iOS users, but can now be accessed through the Chrome notification center on Mac (that little bell icon in your menu bar) as well as through Chrome on Windows and Chromebooks....
