There may be some controversy still surrounding Scarlett Johansson’s casting as an originally-Asian role in the film, but the buzz surrounding Paramount’s upcoming live-action Ghost in the Shell adaptation has been on a steady uphill climb these past few months. Based on the beloved anime/manga property of the same name, the film follows The Major (Johansson), a cyborg with a human soul, as she leads the elite crime-fighting team known as Section 9 through the crime-ridden streets of a futuristic Hong Kong....

It took a long, long time for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier to release after multiple delays and when it finally did in 2012 it felt a tad too late to its own party. Its successor however, first unveiled by Ubisoft last year at E3 2015, seems right on track and perfectly timed with the types of shooters dominating the market. Embracing a complete open-world for the first time in the franchise, the biggest open world to ever be used in an Ubisoft action-adventure game, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands fills its Bolivian setting with dynamic environments end events, and a variety of of objectives, missions, and terrain types....

According to data from App Annie’s latest download and revenue report, Google Play for the first time surpassed the App Store in app downloads during the second quarter of 2013. While Google was able to move past Apple with about 10 percent more downloads during the three month period, the report notes the App Store brought in nearly 2.3x the amount of revenue. App Annie says that Google Play’s growth was driven by emerging markets including Brazil, India, and Russia, and while the App Store still leads by revenue, Google Play closed the gap slightly compared to last quarter and years past....

Apple today officially announced that WWDC 2019 will take place starting June 3rd in San Jose, California. Director Jason Reitman shares a behind-the-scenes photo for Ghostbusters 2020. Based on the 1984 franchise-starter, the new film will pick up on the original storyline that continued with the 1989 sequel. Reitman’s photo includes cast members Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace, along with Reitman’s father, Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two Ghostbusters films. The original Ghostbusters stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis. They portray three purely unique parapsychologists who investigate strange occurrences at Columbia University....

In our case, we decided to revisit John Quincy Adams High and binge Girl Meets World. M. Night Shyamalan’s cameo in Glass avoids a plot hole in the previous movies in his Eastrail 177 trilogy. Though it’s not uncommon for directors to cast themselves in minor roles, Shyamalan’s cameos in Unbreakable and Split are anything but random, as he plays the same character, Jai, in those films as well as this year’s Glass, thus connecting the trilogy’s narrative threads. Establishing a continuity between all three movies - Unbreakable, Split, and Glass - was almost the entire purpose of the final film, as the first two installments were practically standalone movies....

EPIX releases a teaser trailer for Godfather of Harlem. The crime drama focuses on the life and times of Bumpy Johnson, a real-life mafia boss who forever changed New York City’s Harlem neighborhood. In Godfather of Harlem, American actor Forest Whitaker stars as the titular lead. Based on the series’ official premise, the narrative will explore Bumpy Johnson’s return to Harlem after 10 years in jail, and the subsequent conflict that follows as he attempts to gain control....

King of the Monsters offers the campy pleasures of an old-school Godzilla sequel, despite going overboard with its relentless kaiju battles. After a five year absence, the MonsterVerse’s Godzilla has finally returned for Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla reboot launched the kaiju franchise in 2014, and embraced a fairly serious tone reminiscent of Ishirō Honda’s original 1954 classic. By comparison, 2017’s Kong: Skull Island moved away from Edwards’ restrained direction in favor of a far more colorful and rip-roaring MonsterVerse adventure set in the 1970s....

Rodan may be on Ghidorah’s side in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Next year’s blockbuster movie marks the third installment in Warner Bros.’ other burgeoning shared universe, the MonsterVerse, which began with Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla reboot in 2014. While audiences got to see the franchise expand with Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island in 2017, they will finally be able to revisit Godzilla, as well as be introduced to several new monsters, in Godzilla 2, which comes from director Michael Dougherty and screenwriters Dougherty, Max Borenstein, and Zach Shields....

Google Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer David Drummond has written an open letter to Apple and others (namely Microsoft) for the latest trend of going after smartphone patents by buying up others companies patents. Drummond notes that Apple and Microsoft “have always been at each other’s throats” and “when they get into bed together you have to start wondering what’s going on.” Google’s Drummond is referring to the two technology heavyweights “banding” together to win the Novell and Nortel’s old smartphone related patents....
