One of the backend improvements in iOS 9 is a strengthening of app security when accessing data from webservers. The new App Transport Security (ATS) feature ensures that only connections encrypted using HTTPS are permitted. There’s just one problem with that: not all advertisers use HTTPS, so ATS will stop some ads appearing in apps. Google has responded by providing developers with five lines of code that allow them to disable ATS … Given that Google is a strong proponent of HTTPS, and has a stated commitment to using the protocol for ads as well as everything else, it’s perhaps not surprising that the company has come under flack for the move....

According to 9to5Google, a new job listing for a senior engineering manager posted by the tech company hints at Google’s renewed focus on tablets. The listing points to growing out the “Android Tablet App Experience.” “We believe that the future of computing is shifting towards more powerful and capable tablets,” Google’s job listing reads. “We are working to deliver the next chapter of computing and input by launching seamless support across our platforms and hero experiences that unlock new and better ways of being productive and creative....

Google Now: Call Mom The new ability of the Google Search app, Google Now, was recently implemented and it helps you reach your loved ones and regularly called contacts. It’s a lot easier than fiddling with the phone’s keyboard. It was recently announced by the company in a Google+ post. Bit.ly has been dominating the short-link business for a while now thanks to Twitter and friends. In the mean time other contenders have appeared such as is.gd and su.pr. Now Google has officially jumped on the band wagon. Google’s URL shortener has been around for a while now, but previously it was only available using the Google Toolbar or Feedburner. Today they launched the site goo.gl and it integrates with the rest of Google’s services seamlessly....

Following a bigger update earlier this month, Google today updated its Google Play Music app for iPhone with official support for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. That means that the app, which offers access to Google Play Music content and its All Access music streaming service, now takes advantage of the increased real estate on the larger, higher-resolution 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 and 6 Plus displays. Godzilla: King of the Monsters star O’Shea Jackson teases that Godzilla and King Ghidorah will have an unforgettably epic showdown. Jackson says he’s “foaming at the mouth” to see the two go at it. Google has rolled out two new features to mobile search that allow users to find results faster. Users will notice expandable sitelinks that present popular links from certain websites directly from the search page rather than having to look for those important links from the website’s page. Quick links will also begin appearing next to certain results, which offers users a faster way to preview a site before leaving the search page, much like how Google Images handles photo previews....

A Google Photos storage system “mistake” this year resulted in image and video uploads being “inaccurately” counted towards your cloud storage quota. This Photos issue, which is now fixed, was present throughout 2020 and Google is offering a refund for One storage during that period. The company, specifically the Photos team, reached out to those impacted today, noting that this problem applies to a “limited number of people.” They first establish that all uploads are safe and that the bug just relates to your “storage quota....

Google Photos is getting a number of updates today that improve the editing experience through machine learning and more manual controls. Additionally, a standalone PhotoScan app for iOS allows you to digitize your old physical prints with just your phone’s camera. Google notes that a majority of old photos exist as physical copies that would be a huge hassle to manually scan. The PhotoScan app digitizes old prints by just using your smartphone’s camera....

Google didn’t wait until the I/O conference that starts on May 15 and made official the redesign today, after a couple of leaks have surfaced recently. As you can see from the pictures, the new user interface is somewhat card-based, with bigger images that make the overall appearance much cleaner. Earlier today, Netflix offered up the full trailer for its new Ghost in the Shell adaptation: Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. This trailer is the first real chance for fans to get a glimpse of the new series since a single teaser image of the new Netflix series released back in June and a teaser trailer in October. Netflix was confirmed to have acquired the rights back in 2018, when it was announced that Shinji Aramaki would direct the series alongside Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex director Kenji Kamiyama....

As unionization efforts continue around the globe at Apple Stores, a notable moment has occurred in Scotland.
