The latest update to the Google Photos app is a big one: it uses AI technology to add four new features, from resurfacing old memories to fixing sideways photos. The new features are available in the iOS app, Android app (shown above) and on the web. While the iPhone should recognize whether you’re holding the camera vertically or horizontally, there are times when this doesn’t work reliably. The app will now automatically detect photos which appear to be sideways and offer to fix them for you with one tap....

It’s hard to think of a more groundbreaking anime movie than Ghost in the Shell (1995). Based off the acclaimed manga, the film set a new bar for the format and it has since gone on to become a classic in the genre. Ghost in the Shell’s worldwide popularity is largely due to its complex ideas concerning human existence, technology and corruption. Google has confirmed in a press release that it is acquiring Nest Labs, the company behind Nest smart thermostats and fire alarms started by Father of the iPod Tony Fadell. Earlier reports were quickly confirmed along with the transaction price of $3.2 billion in cash in an official announcement posted on the company’s Investor website. As part of Google’s ARCore announcement alongside the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Sony Pictures and Ghost Corps have now announced a new AR Ghostbusters title in development for iOS and Android devices. A new teaser poster has been released for Godzilla vs. Kong. After Godzilla goes head to head with Ghidorah, the giant Kaiju will be going up against King Kong in 2020. The MonsterVerse kicked off in 2014 with Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, before introducing King Kong in Kong: Skull Island. This weekend the series will continue with Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which will set up Godzilla vs. Kong. Godzilla vs. Kong is now less than a year away, so fans already know quite a bit about the project....

The news is confirmed on the Meebo blog, but a price for the transaction is not mentioned (although the company has been said to be worth around $100 million). With the launch of iOS 15 and iPad OS 15, Google announced a handful of app updates to support the latest platform features today. This includes new XL widgets, Focus mode, and Spotlight support. On the homescreen, Google Photos and YouTube Music will be rolling out extra-large widgets. The streaming service sees album/playlist artwork appear at the left, while you get a 4×2 grid of additional suggestions on the right. Meanwhile, the Photos widget will show a wide landscape image from your library....

Update: The new Google Maps app is now available on the App Store. Google announced an update for its Google Maps for iOS app today that adds a fresh new Material Design layout focusing on bright colors and real world surfaces and shadows. The software’s refreshed interface is set to roll out over the next few days, with new features like dinner reservations from OpenTable (US only) and enhanced information cards with photos and reviews of popular attractions near your location....

Google today is rolling out an update to Google Maps on iOS that bumps the app to version 4.24 and brings a few useful new features for users. Now, users can more quickly order food from their favorite restaurants, as well as easily add photos of places from directly within the app and find plus codes for locations around the world. First off, the update adds a new option to quickly order food directly from the app....
