Google added a fun Easter egg for the original Sonic the Hedgehog video game, tying into the upcoming live-action adaptation. The Easter egg is a throwback to fans of the original Sega video game series.
First released in 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog allows gamers to play as the titular character as he races through a series of difficult stages in order to defeat his archenemy, Dr. Robotnik. Gifted with supersonic speed - hence his name - Sonic collects golden rings and avoids dangerous obstacles as he moves from one exotic location to the next. The original video game was followed by a number of sequels, as well as an animated television series that featured his best friend from the game, Tails. Now, with the live-action adaptation releasing this year with Jim Carrey, James Marsden, and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, Google has offered up a fun Easter egg for fans of the original video game.
By searching “Sonic the Hedgehog video game” on Google, a 16-bit version of Sonic from the first Sega Genesis video game appears on the screen. If left alone, Sonic taps his toe in anticipation; and, if left alone for too long, he’ll lay down and rest on the ground, waiting. When clicked, Sonic spins, followed by a very recognizable sound from the original game.
This Easter egg lines up with the release of the first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer for the film. Featuring an updated take on Sonic’s design and featuring Jim Carrey as the nefarious Dr. Robotnik, the trailer showcases the live-action interpretation of the character’s supersonic speed - a far cry from the original 16-bit animation. It also includes one of the more unexpected references to the early ’90s with the inclusion of Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise” in the trailer.
As far as making comparisons between the original Sonic the Hedgehog game and the upcoming movie, it’s a case of apples and oranges. Creative liberties were certainly taken with this adaptation, and even though that’s unavoidable when creating a live-action version of a video game, early reactions to this film haven’t been entirely favorable - even with the film’s first poster. Of course, time will tell whether this live-action take on Sonic lives up to the source material, but for the time being, fans of the video game series might enjoy the simple comfort of revisiting Sonic in his original form as an Easter egg online.
