Here’s what fans can expect from The Good Place season 5 if the NBC series were to ever come back for another installment. The fantasy comedy was created by Michael Schur who is also known for his exceptional work on shows like The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. When The Good Place first debuted in 2016, it garnered high praise from critics and viewers, but all good things must come to an end.

The Good Place originally followed Eleanor (Kristen Bell) as she found herself in the afterlife which resembled a beautiful utopia. While in the “Good Place,” Eleanor encountered Chidi (William Jackson Harper), Tahani (Jameela Jamil), and Jason (Manny Jacinto) while secretly knowing that she didn’t deserve a spot in a Heaven-like afterlife. It’s then revealed that the foursome was actually in the “Bad Place,” being tortured by Michael (Ted Danson), the architect of the community holding the group. In time, Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason aligned with Michael and the programmed Good Place guide, Janet (D’Arcy Carden), in fighting the current afterlife system.

The self-proclaimed “Team Cockroach” never fully got to enjoy the bliss of a peaceful afterlife in the first three seasons, and that doesn’t change in The Good Place season 4, in which humanity hangs in the balance. The crew already wiped Chidi’s memory to allow him to become a test subject for a new experiment. The afterlife needed to be reformed to figure out why new humans haven’t been allowed in the Good Place for hundreds of years. The team finally found that solution, saving the afterlife and the world while also gaining admittance into the actual Good Place. Of course, the titular paradise was not all it was cracked up to be, but they quickly introduced a solution while bringing a sense of finality for the afterlife and the show itself.

The Good Place Season 4 Is The End

The Good Place was renewed for a fourth season at NBC much to the delight of fans before season 3 closed out. A few months later, however, Schur added that the fourth season would also serve as the show’s last installment. The 14-episode season is the full conclusion of the fantasy comedy. As a special tribute to the series and its loyal fans, the series finale was expanded into a 90-minute special. Season 4’s “Whenever You’re Ready” is presumably the last part of Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason’s journey in the afterlife.

Why There Won’t Be A Good Place Season 5

Considering The Good Place has held steady in its ratings on NBC, many viewers might be wondering why the plug was pulled on the series. The decision to end The Good Place was purely a creative decision that NBC respected. Schur has shared that he had the ending for the series mapped out since season 2. There were various talks about expanding the narrative beyond Team Cockroach finally making it to the Good Place with Michael and Janet, but it was felt that the series had reached its lifespan. In short, Schur and the writers shared the story that they wanted to tell, so season 5 wasn’t necessary.

What The Good Place Season 5’s Story Could Be

Of course, it’s always difficult to fully say goodbye to a series especially when reboots and revivals are so common. With NBC’s streaming service, Peacock, on the horizon, it’s impossible to predict what the company has in store. If The Good Place were to ever return for season 5, it would only make sense that the original cast and characters remain the focus. Season 5 could find a loophole that explains the door out of the Good Place doesn’t entirely wipe a person’s existence, allowing for the core four to reunite with Michael and Janet for a special reason. There could also be a major problem with the afterlife system they created forcing Team Cockroach back to the drawing board. There are truly numerous ideas but for now, it’s best to consider that The Good Place season 4 is the final goodbye.
