The 77th Annual Golden Globes were hosted on January 5th, 2020. While you’ve probably seen most of the highly-anticipated and critically-acclaimed films, we’re sure you’ve made a list of the ones you still need to watch. While there were many nominated, this list is here to help direct your bingeing efforts in the swing of awards season.

In case you’re wondering which movies are worth their hype, and some that might be a bit overrated, look no further. Here are 5 nominated flicks you should go watch immediately, and 5 that are honestly pretty overrated.

Overrated: Booksmart

This movie only got one nomination for the Golden Globes, but that might even be one too many. Beanie Feldstein got nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, which, we have absolutely nothing bad to say about this woman.

However, this movie maybe didn’t need to end up being an award-nominated film. While it still did well with the critics, it didn’t do as well as most of the other nominations. Still, you can check it out for a fun teen drama that’s entertaining and quirky.

Binge: Parasite

This flick only got 3 nominations, and that’s honestly a crime. It only won for Best Foreign Film, and didn’t even score a nomination for Best Motion Picture. This Korean film was directed by the brilliant Bong Joon Ho, and tells a dark and fascinating story about class and family.

Seriously, if you haven’t seen this one, it’s time to expand your horizons and dive in. You won’t be disappointed. We haven’t seen a flick like this probably ever, and that’s the best compliment it can receive.

Overrated: The Two Popes

This movie scored four nominations, including two for acting, and honestly this movie isn’t as amazing as it’s made out to be. We love Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, but this flick is likely nothing more than a wholesome and comedic tale.

This biography comedy is a tale of bridging ideologies between Pope Francis and Pope Benedict, and it’s pretty entertaining. Still, it might not hold up to the other nominees, despite being wholesome and fun.

Binge: Little Women

With 2 Golden Globe nominations, this movie deserved way more recognition (we didn’t forget about you, Greta). This flick is the newest adaptation of this classic tale, and honestly, it was a shame for Florence Pugh, director Greta Gerwig, and much more of the cast to be totally snubbed at the Golden Globes.

If you want to cry out of joy and sadness and fill every inch of your soul, literally look no further than this flick. It’s stunning to watch, hilarious, and honestly what everyone needs to fill their hearts.

Overrated: Rocketman

This flick scored 3 nominations, and actually won 2 of them, for Best Actor (Taron Egerton) and Best Original Song. Honestly, it deserved these nominations AND wins, because Taron was phenomenal, and Elton John is a king.

Still, this movie is totally cheesy, and we’re a bit surprised it’s receiving such attention from critics. It’s a lot of fun, but don’t expect too much beyond some singing and some super cheesy goodness.

Binge: Marriage Story

This drama scored 6 nominations, making it the leader of the Golden Globes. However, it only won 1! Congrats, Laura Dern, but every other nomination was also totally deserved.

In fact, Scar-Jo was probably snubbed of her win as Best Actress, and this film is the most authentic and raw movie we’ve seen in a LONG time. If you haven’t watched it, we suggest tuning it to this pure tale of a family sticking together in the midst of a difficult divorce. It’s absolutely stunning, seriously.

Overrated: Lion King

This live-action Disney flick received a nomination for Best Animated Motion Picture, and honestly, we have a few questions. No one is doubting Beyonce’s nomination for Best Original Song, but this movie seriously didn’t blow any of us away.

Sure, it gave us a whole ton of nostalgia, but was it really the best animated flick of the year? Is it even animated? Again, we have some questions, but at least it’s a fun time.

Binge: The Irishman

With 5 nominations, somehow this flick didn’t win any of its categories. Honestly, that’s kind of a crime, especially for actors Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. Still, this Martin Scorsese directed movie is a brilliant telling of the story behind mobster Jimmy Hoffa, told from the perspective of a hitman, Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro).

This movie is brilliant, to say the least, and it’s honestly a cinematic masterpiece. It’s a long ride, but we promise it’s worth every second. You can’t pass up Scorsese AND this cast, and we can’t think of anything more nomination worthy.

Overrated: Hustlers

This movie only scored one nomination, and it was for Jennifer Lopez’s role. We love this queen, and no one is disputing this nomination. In fact, some were surprised by its inclusion mainly because of its core plot—erotic dancers turn the tables on their elite clients during an economic recession.

Although some found the movie to be ‘overrated’, they have to remember its important theme — downtrodden women doing whatever it takes to make it in a specific environment where the odds, by default, are against them — and the powerful performances from its two leads, Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu. Both of whom are women of color. So, it’s no wonder this feminist film resonated with so many viewers—all of whom are from different walks of life.

Binge: Knives Out

This “whodunnit” crime comedy scored 3 nominations, but it unfortunately couldn’t bring home any wins. Ana De Armas and Daniel Craig certainly deserved their nominations, though, and it definitely earned its Best Motion Picture - Comedy nomination.

This flick is totally underrated as being just another funny crime flick. It’s so much more than that, and director Rian Johnson created a serious artistic masterpiece. This movie is genius, and there’s so many subtle choices that are brilliantly entertaining. This is one of the most fun flicks of the year, but is still so worthy of being apart of awards season.
