The 77th Annual Golden Globes premiered on Sunday, January 5th, 2020. While there are two main motion picture categories (drama and comedy/musical), we clearly received two winners from these categories.

However, in case you’re wondering which ones to watch first before the Oscar nominations come out, we thought we’d rank all of them. There can only be one winner, but what about the silver and bronze? Plus, this list is definitely beyond categories. So without further ado, here are all 10 of the nominated feature films, comedy and drama, ranked.

The Two Popes

This movie is certainly a comedic treat, and we loved Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce. This biography comedy drama tells the story of Pope Benedict and Pope Francis, and their merging ideologies behind the walls of the Vatican.

Of course, this movie was nominated for comedy, and deserved it, but it unfortunately takes the bottom spot on this list. Still, we suggest watching it for a fun and uplifting flick. Plus, it’s totally wholesome. With four nominations, it didn’t bring home a win, but is still pretty great.

Rocketman

We can’t deny that this movie is totally fun and that we loved every second of living Elton John’s life. Directed by Dexter Fletcher, Taron Egerton blew this role out of the water. In fact, he took home the win for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy.

Still, while this film doesn’t quite hold up to its counterparts, this was certainly the best award it could win. Plus, it also won for Best Original Song, so there are definitely good parts of this flick, even if it takes 9th on this list out of the nominations.

Dolemite Is My Name

This biography comedy drama stars the brilliant Eddie Murphy, and he plays real-life legend Rudy Ray Moore. This movie is hilarious and totally mesmerizing, and certainly deserved some recognition at the awards.

However, this movie doesn’t quite match up to the other 7, as much as we enjoyed every second of this unique and wholesome flick. Of course, Eddie Murphy is stunning, and scored a nomination for his role.

Jojo Rabbit

This comedy is probably the most underrated of the bunch. A young boy in Hitler’s army finds out that his mother is secretly hiding a Jewish girl in their house.

Roman Griffin Davis, the young star, actually scored a nomination for Best Actor! While he didn’t snag the win, we definitely suggest checking out this underrated and brilliant film. It’s probably not like anything you’ve seen before, and it’s totally quirky and hilarious.

Knives Out

This “whodunnit” crime comedy scored three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Actor (Daniel Craig) and Best Actress (Ana de Armas). While neither took home the win, this flick is one of the most entertaining movies of the year.

It’s brilliant, and director Rian Johnson certainly deserves a pat on the back for the genius of this film. With a stellar cast and a riveting, hilarious story, this movie should certainly be on our radar, and we expect it to get a few nods when the Oscar nominations are released.

Joker

This genius and different DC flick scored four nominations, and actually won 3 of them, including Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix, Best Director for Sam Mendes, and Best Original Score for Hildur Guðnadóttir. The only one it didn’t win was for Best Motion Picture, but we know it certainly deserved its nomination.

This movie is a brilliant and dark take of the Joker’s background, and tells a very deep story about society and wellness. If you haven’t seen it, we suggest watching it immediately.

Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood

This movie was directed by the brilliant Quentin Tarantino, and starred an A-list cast, including Margot Robbie, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Al Pacino. With 5 nominations, this strange and unique drama comedy took home 3, including Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Brad Pitt) and Best Screenplay.

Of course, this movie also took home the win for Best Motion Picture for a Musical or Comedy, which explains why it’s the highest of the five on this list. Of course, we expect some Oscar nominations, and this flick is certainly worth your time.

Marriage Story

We all love a good drama, which is the why the gold, silver, and bronze all fall in this category. This one is directed by Noah Baumbach, and stars the wonderful Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, and Laura Dern.

With 6 whopping nominations, this film only managed to take home one (for Best Supporting Actress - Laura Dern), but this movie certainly deserved every nomination it received. This movie is wholesome and pure, and should certainly be on your radar.

The Irishman

This Martin Scorsese directed drama scored 5 nominations, and while they didn’t take home a win, we feel confident giving this film the second spot on this list. This film is a long ride, but it’s an absolutely mesmerizing and brilliant tale about Jimmy Hoffa and the Teamsters, told from the perspective of hitman, Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro).

This stellar, classic cast and crew should be enough to peak your interest, and we can say this film certainly lived up to expectations.

1917

This film was directed by Sam Mendes and scored 3 nominations. It won two of them, including Best Director and Best Motion Picture - Drama. Clearly, it’s obvious why this flick takes the #1 spot on this list.

While this movie doesn’t receive its wide release until January 10th, you have plenty of time to study up on WWI and prepare to hit the theaters. This movie will definitely be making waves for years to come, and we definitely suggest watching this first and foremost with awards season in mid-swing.
