Gold has joined the ranks of the many upcoming fall/winter releases that could gain some awards recognition. The Matthew McConaughey drama/thriller looks to be something along the lines of The Wolf of Wall Street meets The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Those are high marks to reach, but there are still a few months for audiences to be ready for what’s to come.

The first trailer for the film hit a little while back and sets up an interesting story based on true events. It also served a way for audiences to see their first look at a balding, forty-pounds heavier McConaughey. Now a second trailer for the upcoming film has been released, which doubles down on what was established, with plenty of setup for the supposed fun to come.

This trailer puts a higher emphasis on what kind of craziness McConaughey’s Kenny Wells character is going to get up to in the film. While there is certainly drama that will ensue, it is as if Gold is well aware that there is plenty of excitement in the ride that will be presented as well. This also means highlighting some of the other cast members, including Edgar Ramirez, Bryce Dallas Howard, Corey Stoll and Timothy Simmons, among others.

Gold is co-written and directed by Academy Award winner Stephen Gaghan (Traffic), who seems to have lightened up a lot since 2005’s Syriana. It is actually Gaghan’s first film in 11 years and arrives after attempts by previously attached directors Michael Mann, Spike Lee and Paul Haggis to bring this story to screen. The screenplay was originally developed by Patrick Massett and John Zinman, who have largely worked in television (most notably Friday Night Lights). As mentioned, the film was inspired by true events concerning a major gold mining scandal from 1993.

Given the vibe of the trailer, it looks like Gold  will be telling a pretty familiar rise and fall story. A biopic surrounding a money-hungry lead character is nothing all that new, but the exotic locations mixed with a corporate vibe could prove to be very entertaining. It certainly helps that McConaughey looks so game to act like a fool in the midst of trying to find professional success. Of course, the film is also playing up a wild scene involving a tiger, so however things ultimately play out, it appears Gold could at least be one of the possible awards contenders that has a good dose of craziness involved.

Gold opens in U.S. theaters on December 25th, 2016.
