The latest summer blockbuster to get the Honest Trailer treatment is Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Released at the end of May, Godzilla’s latest cinematic outing was highly anticipated among fans. Early reactions were positive, but critic reviews bent toward the negative side. A low box office opening is not stopping Godzilla vs. Kong from releasing next year, which pits the two MonsterVerse creatures together.

However one feels about Godzilla: King of the Monsters, one cannot deny the level of passion for bringing the titans to life. Director Michael Dougherty kept the monsters true to their Japanese counterparts. Ghidorah was the strongest monster in the early Godzilla movies, something that is readily apparent in the 2019 movie. Rodan’s volcanic emergence in Godzilla: King of the Monsters was one of the most acclaimed parts of the film, and had imagery similar to 1956’s Rodan. Mothra had something of a drastic redesign, but her character was identical to the Mothra of the TOHO films. However, while some reviews appreciated the monsters, the consistent negative thing cited was the human element. Many reviews agree that the scripting needed to be better, and Honest Trailer has a good time poking fun at the characters.

Screen Junkies has uploaded its Honest Trailer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The video pokes fun at 2014’s Godzilla, and then dives into the criticisms of the 2019 film. Check out the Honest Trailer below.

Although some fans may not agree with the video, Screen Junkies does its job in discussing what many consider to be the negative aspects of the movie. The video amusingly talks about how the 2019 film went all out with the monster scenes after the more low-key 2014 movie. The video pokes fun at how the battles often took place at night or in a storm, which was a common criticism among reviews. The human element is of course brought up in the video as well. Fans will likely get a chuckle out of the Honest Trailer saying to put Dr. Ilene Chen in a “tiny seashell,” referencing the original Mothra fairies.

Whether one enjoys the movie or not, the fact remains that Godzilla: King of the Monsters was a box office disappointment, and not a critical hit. Godzilla vs. Kong will have to answer its predecessor’s complaints. Can the film achieve success? It is largely possible, and unlike the massive gap between 2014 and 2019, fans only have to wait until spring, 2020, to catch Godzilla on the big screen again.
