A character from Kong: Skull Island will return in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Legendary is building their own shared universe revolving around the world’s biggest monsters. Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla in 2014 kicked it off, and then last year’s Kong: Skull Island took audiences back to the Vietnam War to explore King Kong. Next up is a sequel to Godzilla, but one that features almost an entirely new cast, and several new monsters as evident by the first trailer.

With the shared universe model being used, there’s been a lingering question over how connected these various movies will be. Skull Island’s tag helped set up the several new monsters coming to Godzilla 2, but there’s no character crossover - or at least so far.

In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes from San Diego Comic-Con, Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty revealed a surprising twist to the cast. He said, “We do bring back one character from Kong: Skull Island.” Dougherty isn’t ready to reveal who that character is, instead teasing everyone will have to check out the movie next year to find out.

When Kong: Skull Island came to an end, the biggest characters that were teased to have a future were Tom Hiddleston’s James Conrad, Brie Larson’s Mason Weaver, Corey Hawkins’ Houston Brooks, and Tian Jing’s San. Whoever the mysterious crossover character is, it isn’t one of the main characters. There is one possibility, though, that could make the most sense. One of the only cast members not have their character confirmed is Charles Dance, and the age gap between him and Tom Hiddleston works perfectly for him to be an older James Conrad.

There is always the possibility that Dougherty’s tease is even more secretive, though. Given the improvements in aging VFXs, it is possible that Legendary managed to bring back other actors from Skull Island and simply age them up. That would require more work on their part in post-production, but would also be a tougher secret to possibly keep under wraps. The potential of Dance playing an older Conrad fits with the timeline and would give the MonsterVerse some type of crossover character. While theorists are sure to run wild with trying to crack Dougherty’s tease, it shouldn’t be expected for the film to confirm the character anytime soon. The director appears to want to keep this as under wraps as possible, while still teasing how the universe is connecting.
