Godzilla: King of the Monsters star O’Shea Jackson teases that Godzilla and King Ghidorah will have an unforgettably epic showdown. Jackson says he’s “foaming at the mouth” to see the two go at it. The highly anticipated monster flick will also feature two other prominent kaiju associated with Godzilla: Rodan and Mothra.

Following the success of Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla in 2014, Lionsgate announced plans for a shared cinematic universe called the MonsterVerse that would include a sequel and Kong: Skull Island. With Edwards directing, Godzilla: King of the Monsters was expected to be full of kaiju action with Toho monsters Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah joining the fray. When Edwards dropped out, the release date was pushed back to 2019, and Krampus director Michael Dougherty was tapped as his replacement. Filming for King of the Monsters wrapped in September. A third film, Godzilla vs. Kong will release in 2020.

O’Shea Jackson, who has an important role in King of the Monsters, talked to Collider about Godzilla’s battle with King Ghidorah. According to Jackson, Godzilla and King Ghidorah will engage in a showdown “you will never forget”.

Jackson’s comments show an enthusiasm that will likely make Godzilla fans even more excited for the upcoming film. King Ghidorah, the three-headed golden dragon that shoots lightning from its mouth, is arguably Godzilla’s greatest foe. The villain first appeared in 1964’s Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster, a film which coincidentally included Rodan and Mothra, the same two monsters who will appear in King of the Monsters.

As a Godzilla fan, I know that I was shocked to find out that the second movie has King Ghidorah, like, King Ghidorah is the Godzilla bad guy, like, three-headed golden dragon that shoots lightning, is gonna be in the movie that I’m in! We got Mothra, we got Rodan, and we got King Ghidorah all in the same film, and in the last scene between Godzilla and King Ghidorah, I promise you, you will never forget it, in your life. As a nerd, I am foaming at the mouth to get in the editing room… Godzilla will be the number 1 movie. The way that [Godzilla] and Ghidorah fight… man… Kong better bring some shit.

Godzilla and Rodan teamed up to battle Ghidorah a second time in Invasion of the Astro Monster, which was primarily set on an alien planet. Ghidorah has been a recurring villain for Godzilla in numerous films. Ghidorah’s last movie appearance came 17 years ago with Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack in 2001. Ghidorah is occasionally portrayed as a monster so powerful that Godzilla cannot defeat him alone.

Jackson’s remarks about the battle suggest that Godzilla, at least for the final showdown, will get a chance to face off against King Ghidorah alone and without any help from Mothra or Rodan. It remains to be seen if the battle will be able to top the dramatic final scenes of the 2014 film.
