Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty wants to see Godzilla taking on the Avengers in a movie crossover. Though a battle between the King of the Monsters and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes would be a showdown of epic proportions, this is one fight fans will unfortunately never get to see.

The Avengers and other Marvel heroes have ruled the big screen for the past 10 years, thanks to Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. Earlier this month, Captain Marvel propelled the MCU’s total box office gross to over $18 billion. The MCU has made Marvel Studios a dominant force in the movie industry, but other studios are getting in on the action by building their own shared cinematic universes. Among them is Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse, a universe that includes Godzilla, King Kong, Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Rodan.

In a tweet, Dougherty jokes about seeing a classic Marvel comic made into a movie: Godzilla #23. During the late 1970s, Marvel had acquired the licensing rights to make a Godzilla comic book series. The rights have since reverted to other publishers, such as Dark Horse Comics and IDW Publishing.

During the short time that Godzilla was a Marvel Comics character, the King of the Monsters came face-to-face with numerous Marvel characters, including the Fantastic Four, Dum Dum Dugan, Hercules, and Devil Dinosaur. However, his most memorable clash with Marvel heroes came in Godzilla #23 when the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes get called in to help curb Godzilla’s latest rampage. Godzilla battles the Fantastic Four and a powerful Avengers team that consists of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hank Pym, Wasp, Vision, and Scarlet Witch. However, even their combined might isn’t enough to defeat Godzilla. Even Thor feels helpless while struggling to keep Godzilla at bay. Only a young Japanese boy is able to convince Godzilla to end the fighting and leave in peace.

It’s easy to see why Dougherty would want such an exciting battle brought to life on the big screen. MCU versions of Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, Vision, and Scarlet Witch fighting to save New York City from the MonsterVerse’s Godzilla would certainly be a sight to behold, even though this particular version of Godzilla, who is more heroic than his comic book counterpart, would most likely have no need to fight the Avengers. Regardless, rights issues would keep this dream from ever becoming a reality, though a Godzilla-Pacific Rim crossover, on the other hand, may actually be a possibility.
