God Of War director Cory Barlog admits the acclaimed game didn’t receive any story DLC because his ideas were a little too big. The original God Of War trilogy featured the gory misadventures of Kratos, a brutal general who slaughters his way through various Greek gods and creatures in his quest for revenge. The games featured epic setpieces, addictive gameplay and a compelling anti-hero in Kratos, who is strangely likeable despite being just as much of a monster as his enemies.

While 2013’s prequel God Of War: Ascension was a solid game, it didn’t do much to innovate the formula of the series, so a fresh start was needed. God Of War 2018 provided just that, by reframing Kratos as a loving father to son Atreus who is trying to renounce his bloody past. The game drew from Norse mythology and featured satisfying combat mixed with a surprisingly emotional story. The PS4 exclusive title received critical raves upon release from both players and critics and sold 5 million copies in its first month.

Given the acclaim leveled at God Of War, it’s a little strange the game hasn’t received any additional story content since its April 2018 release. Now in a new interview with IGN, director Cory Barlog reveals that while he wrote some DLC stories, they were deemed a little too ambitious.

Story-driven DLC usually adds an extra couple hours of gameplay, but the examples Barlog cites - like The Last Of Us: Left Behind or Uncharted: Lost Legacy - are essentially new games in themselves. It sounds like Barlog was interested in pursuing his DLC ideas, but the commitment of time and resources was too much. While it’s a little disappointing God Of War didn’t receive more story content, there’s always a chance Barlog’s ideas could resurface in a sequel.

There was a time when I wrote a couple of DLCs that we were talking about. Ok, what if we did release some other stuff after? You know, there are interesting ideas but I think the amount of time we’d have to put into it, it would start to end up kinda like a [The Last Of Us] Left Behind or a [Infamous] First Light kinda thing where it’s just so big…like [Uncharted] Lost Legacy or something like that. I think I have a difficulty with the lower ambition portion, that I end up [saying] ‘maybe it’s a little too big!’

While fans await news of the inevitable God Of War sequel, director Steven DeKnight (Pacific Rim: Uprising) revealed in 2018 that he once met with Sony to discuss an R-rated movie version. DeKnight also stated he felt Dave Bautista (Guardians Of The Galaxy) would make a perfect live-action Kratos, but also admitted he wasn’t actively involved in such a project. A live-action God Of War has been mooted ever since the release of the first game, with creator David Jaffe claiming Daniel Craig was once approached but turned it down.
