It’s time to get revved up for an all new Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with a brand new video taking viewers behind the scenes of the prequel film Leatherface. The eighth (?!) movie in the series goes back to the very beginning, explaining how a sweet young boy grew up to become the famous cannibal whose terrified audiences for over four decades.
This latest installment stars Stephen Dorff, Lili Taylor and Iron Fist himself Finn Jones, and promises to return to the primal fear and psychological terror of the original movie. Leatherface was helmed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, who previously made a gory splash with their excellent 2007 French horror movie Inside.
In the video above, the duo explain that the Leatherface script’s fresh take on the iconic villain is what drew them to the project, along with the opportunity to play inside the world of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and return to the farmhouse from the original film. The video also shows off the movie’s rich visual look, along with some visceral scenes of gore. It’s clear everyone involved are excited by its potential, with co-star Taylor comparing it to some surprising movies:
“What attracted me to Leatherface was really talking with the directors. When they told me they wanted to do something that was a cross between Terrence Malick, like Badlands, and The Virgin Suicides, I thought ‘I’m there’ because what I love is this stuff that’s happening with people pushing a genre as far as they could push it and it’s exciting to me.”
While the video certainly makes the latest entry look promising, fans may want to remain cautious. The last sequel may have been a success, but it was also critically panned. Leatherface itself has set on a shelf for two years, and will only be receiving a limited theatrical push. The movie will also be adding to the franchise’s famously twisted timeline; it’s a prequel to the original and Texas Chainsaw 3D that ignores the other movies in the series. This also includes The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, which was a prequel to the 2003 remake.
Fans have been burned by poor quality sequels before, but on the bright side, early reviews for Leatherface have been mostly positive thus far. The movie will also be coming shortly after the sad passing of Tobe Hooper, the director of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and its first sequel. Here’s hoping Leatherface will prove both a worthy tribute to its creator and a solid entry in its own right.
