Fans of the once hit show Glee who are longing for a reboot of the high school musical comedy series aren’t alone. Former cast member Jane Lynch, who starred as former Cheerios coach turned principal of McKinley high Sue Sylvester, is another who hopes to see the show brought back to life. The show ran for 6 season (from 2009 to 2015) but has been marred by tragedy and controversy since it ended. Series star Corey Monteith died tragically of a heroin overdose just before the cast were to begin shooting season 5, and former castmember Mark Salling died by suicide at the end of January, just weeks before he was due to be sentenced in his child pornography case.
Quite a few members of the Glee cast reunited recently for a ‘GLEE-Union’ that cast member Matthew Morrison, who played Mr. Schue on the TV show, posted a photo of on Instagram. In addition to Morrison, who brought along his wife Renee and baby Revel, Lynch, Becca Tobin (Kitty), Vanessa Lengies (Sugar), Kevin McHale (Artie), Amber Riley (Mercedes), Naya Rivera (Santana), Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina), Chris Colfer (Kurt) and Heather Morris (Brittany) all gathered for the reunion dinner in LA. Notably absent was Lea Michele, who played Rachel Berry during the series’ run.
While there’s no current plans to reboot Glee like some other popular shows have been doing recently, scene stealer Lynch revealed in a recent interview with US Weekly that she would love to see the show reimagined on television once again with a whole new cast of talented teens:
“That was a winning combination of elements that came together. I think they should go to another high school and have new kids, a new coach - do the whole thing over."
In addition to the cast members who reunited for the dinner, choreographer Zachary Woodlee, script coordinator Aristotle Kousakis, and writers Matt Hodgson and Michael Hitchcock were also in attendance. “It’s a GLEE-Union!! What a beautiful night hangin with my old kids & new kid! Ohana…” Morrison captioned the picture of the happy looking group on Instagram. Riley posted her own version of the picture writing, “I love these Gleeple, see you all in another couple of years.”
Glee was one of the most unique, popular and highly rated shows up until its final season. Series creator Ryan Murphy tackled issues such as LGBTQ rights, disabilities, bullying, teen pregnancy, alcohol abuse, texting while driving, school shootings, suicide, and domestic violence during its 6 season run. While it may have gone off the rails at some points, all these issues are still relevant for teens today, some even more so. The show featured a talented cast of relative unknowns who had people tuning in week after week for its biting social commentary mixed with catchy musical numbers. It launched the careers of Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, Amber Riley, Melissa Benoist and Darren Criss (among others), and had families tuning in to watch together. It even featured guest appearances by a wide variety of stars, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Katie Couric and Neil Patrick Harris.
With reboots and revivals of TV shows like Roseanne, Charmed and Roswell all the works right now, it’s not surprising that there are those who want to see Glee revisited too. And it’s clear from the popularity of movies like Pitch Perfect and Mama Mia that there’s still a market for a glee club/musically-driven TV show. The question is: can a new school setting and new cast capture the magic of the original TV series, or would Glee be better left alone?
