Claire Foy revealed her Lisbeth Salander look during an appearance by the cast and director of The Girl in the Spider’s Web. Swedish mystery writer Stieg Larsson debuted the character of Lisbeth Salander, an antisocial computer hacker with a distinctive look, in the 2004 novel The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. The book, published after Larsson passed away, was followed by two sequels Larsson completed before his death. The three books became collectively known as the Millennium series, and have since been followed by two more sequels written by David Lagercrantz.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and its pair of Larsson-penned sequels, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest, received Swedish film adaptations starring Noomi Rapace as Salander. Hollywood director David Fincher later remade Dragon Tattoo starring Rooney Mara as Salander and Daniel Craig as her partner, journalist Mikael Blomkvist. For quite some time there was talk of Mara and Fincher returning for The Girl Who Played With Fire but it never materialized. Now, the fourth book in the series, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, will receive its own adaptation directed by Fede Alvarez and starring Claire Foy as Salander.

Now The Girl in the Spider’s Web has given the world its first glimpse of what Claire Foy looks like as Lisbeth Salander. Foy’s very short haircut was on display as the actress appeared with Spider’s Web co-stars and director Fede Alvarez in Stockholm. See the images below:

Stieg Larsson described Salander in the books as sporting short red hair dyed black, pale skin, a skinny frame and multiple piercings and tattoos. That description was very much taken to heart when Noomi Rapace played the character in the original movies, and helped give that version of Salander an iconic darkness. Rooney Mara then took things to another level in the American version, really playing up the paleness and skinniness, and even going so far as to get a real eyebrow piercing (she did stop short of getting Salander’s extensive tattoos for real).

Given the iconic nature of the Salander character, folks are naturally curious to see how Claire Foy will look when she takes on the role. The new images do give us a look at Foy’s haircut, which is in keeping with the classic description of Salander. Wardrobe-wise, Foy looks much more conservative and normal than she will in the movie. Lisbeth Salander likes cutting a striking, gothy figure wherever she goes, in keeping with her dark backstory and super-serious persona. Joining Foy in the Girl in the Spider’s Web cast are Sverrir Gudnason as Blomkvist, Sylvia Hoeks, Lakieth Stanfield, Vicky Krieps, Stephen Merchant, and Claes Bang.
