Gilmore Girls will mark Netflix’s third high-profile revival of a beloved television show, following in the wake of Arrested Development and sequel series Fuller House. The Gilmore Girls revival will see the return of Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as their iconic characters, the mother-daughter duo of Lorelei and Rory Gilmore. Additionally on board the revival are creator and executive producer Amy Sherman-Palladino, as well as her husband Daniel Palladino, who will be serving as executive producer.
Graham and Bledel are joined by an extensive cast of returning Gilmore Girls stars, including Kelly Bishop as Lorelei’s mother Emily Gilmore, Scott Patterson as the diner owner Luke Danes, and the recently added Melissa McCarthy as Lorelei’s best friend and business partner Sookie St. James. Previously released images from the Gilmore Girls revival brought fans back to Stars Hollow and now Netflix has revealed official HD versions.
Netflix released a total of seven HD photos from the Gilmore Girls revival, featuring Lorelei, Rory, Luke, and Emily as they pick up their lives nine years after the controversial series finale in 2007. The revival will be comprised of four 90-minute movies, each following a different season of the calendar year. Take a look at the photos:
Additionally, Deadline is reporting Gavin Polone, an executive producer on the original Gilmore Girls series, is suing Warner Bros Television for break of contract after failing to compensate him per his original deal in 2000. The suit claims WBTV refused to compensate Polone for the four 90-minute Gilmore Girls films being produced for Netflix on the basis that the revival is a derivative work and, thus, doesn’t fall under the original deal.
The suit highlights an interesting aspect of Gilmore Girls, which is that it’s somewhat of an outlier from other television revivals. While Netflix produced a fourth season (a continuation) of Arrested Development, Fuller House is technically a new series that borrowed many elements from Full House. Similarly, the recent return of The X-Files was another season of the previous show, while Heroes Reborn was a new series based on Heroes. These distinctions matter when it comes to honoring the contracts and deals made for the original shows.
However, it’s unclear if the Gilmore Girls revival is considered a continuation of the previous series or a new series of movies based on the original show. Given the popularity of television revivals in recent years, it’s a necessary distinction that must be made in order to make sure the appropriate people are compensated and receive credit for their work. Though this distinction may not concern fans who are simply excited to return to Stars Hollow with Lorelei and Rory, it may offer insight into whether or not the Netflix revival will technically be a continuation of Gilmore Girls.
