After nearly a decade off the air, Gilmore Girls returned to the small screen with Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life last November. The four-part Netflix revival picked up 10 years after the original series finale, following mom and daughter duo Rory and Lorelai Gilmore as they navigated life together over the course of one year. Its reception proved to be overwhelmingly positive, spurring rampant online buzz and strong enough ratings to surpass fellow streaming favorite Marvel’s Luke Cage.
In the months since, fans have been quick to speculate about whether its success could mean even more new episodes down the line. Netflix teased the possibility in late December, and while series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino has been adamant that A Year In the Life was a “very specific journey,’ she hasn’t ruled out any season 2 potential. When pressed about any behind-scenes discussion, cast members insisted those conversations had yet to take place, but now it looks like things might be moving forward.
According to TV Line, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos reportedly told UK’s Press Association that “very preliminary” talks are underway for more episodes. As he told the publication:
While that’s far from an official green light, it’s enough to stir the pot for viewers anxious to see what Rory’s future holds after that cliffhanger finale. It’s clear that there’s a demand for more of the show, and Netflix is rarely stingy when it comes to granting more seasons to its original series, so it’s hard to imagine them saying no to a project that seems like such a sure-fire hit.
“We hope [it happens]. We obviously loved the success of the show [and] fans loved how well it was done; it delivered what they hoped. The worst thing is to wait a couple of years for your favorite show to come back and for it to disappoint you, but [series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and exec producer Dan Palladino] sure delivered and people were really excited about more. And we have been talking to them about the possibility of that.”
Still, Sherman-Palladino had pitched the revival as “close-ended,” and some of the cast has since moved on to other endeavors. Sherman-Palladino’s own The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel debuts later this month, Alexis Bledel (Rory) is set to star in Hulu’s forthcoming The Handmaid’s Tale, Scott Patterson (Luke Daines) is attached to several upcoming movies, and Melissa McCarthy, who barely squeezed in a cameo during A Year In the Life, has since blossomed into a big screen mainstay. Plus, A Year In the Life ’s narrative came very much full circle, and sometimes it’s best to close out on a high note. Whether or not Gilmore Girls returns will likely depend on if there’s enough story left to be told, and whether its stars can make the time for it. Hopefully, fans won’t have to wait another decade for a decision.
