The day of reckoning is nearly at hand. The world is about to face a cataclysmic event, one which will test the mettle of four women and all of America (depending upon how you interpret the hype). Yes, the third Ghostbusters installment is almost upon us. Whether you believe the haters, Dan Akroyd, or are waiting to judge the film on its own merits, the Paul Feig-helmed reboot is nearing its own judgment day.
As hullabaloo over the restart continues, a new third international trailer gives fans and haters a little more material to fuel their Ghostbusters flame wars.
Although brief, the latest international trailer adds a several heretofore unseen moments from the film. Included in the teaser is little more banter between the ‘busters and their new assistant Kevin (Chris Hemsworth) about his spiritual beliefs. The snippet also features a frightened yet excited Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) proclaiming “Ghosts are real” into a camera after being slimed.
Filmgoers can also catch a glimpse of a live-action test of the new proton packs by Gilbert, Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy), and Jillian Holtzman (Kate McKinnon), which isn’t entirely successful. The scene both acts as an homage to the classic elevator scene from the original film, as well as taking it a step farther and actually showing the trial and error process. In addition, Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones) is assailed by an overly aggressive mannequin (perhaps wishing it was Andrew McCarthy?).
Each subsequent trailer has introduced a little more material from the upcoming film – some arguably too much. The international trailers have, in general, been more thoughtfully constructed than their first and second U.S. counterparts. Certainly some things have been updated, including the theme song and state-of-the-art ghosts. However, the recent international spots more successfully matched the tone of the original films.
Despite the mediocre early trailers (possibly due to poor marketing efforts), the film was still voted one of the most anticipated films of the summer. Those who’ve been against the reboot since the beginning, are unlikely to ever give it a chance, which is their right. The true test of the upcoming Ghostbusters restart, though, is whether it revives or kills the franchise – something we’ll have to wait another month to find out.
