The first official trailer for writer/director Paul Feig’s reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise is finally here, thus opening the proverbial floodgates of fanboy accolades and reproach, as the new movie is set to star an all-women team of paranormal exterminators. Ahead of the film’s release, fans of the preceding installments from the 1980s are likely eager to see which fundamental elements of the original screenplay and and story remain in Feig’s twenty-first century, gender-bending reboot.
Based on the series of set photos released thus far, in addition to eyewitness testimony from certain members of the cast, viewers know that some key elements from the independent property created by Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd are set for a return to the big screen this Summer. And the latest exclusive bit of promotional footage from Sony Pictures Entertainment features another aspect of the former category.
In the featurette included above, Feig introduces viewers to Dr. James Maxwell, a Senior Post-Doctoral Associate and Particle Physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who served as a reference on the set of the Ghostbusters reboot. Maxwell helped the cast and crew behind the scenes understand the underlying science behind the famous Proton Pack, and instituted an updated bit of technology that would make more sense from a scientific standpoint for a film that takes place over thirty years after said technology was first introduced.
With the help of Maxwell and at least one of his esteemed colleagues from MIT, everything about the new Ghostbusters base of operations is scientifically accurate, down to the last scrap of paper detailing various mathematical equations and scientific blueprints. Given Feig’s stated intention in the script of having Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy’s characters standing in as the film’s true paranormal scientists, the level of exacting detail and academic accuracy on display throughout the footage featured above is indicative of a more “realistic” horror/comedy than the ones starring Ramis, Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson (released in 1984 and 1989).
Despite any outstanding outcry from the film’s outstanding fanbase regarding the inclusion of an all-women team of heroes for the third go-around in the movie franchise, Feig’s Ghostbusters looks to be shaping up into something worth seeing for old and new viewers of the series alike. Featuring the likes of current and former Saturday Night Live players, save for the inclusion of McCarthy, the new movie set in the cinematic universe first brought to life by Ivan Reitman has certainly gotten quiet the face-lift for its twenty-first century return - though it would appear that the right people are behind the wheel of this latest comedy franchise vehicle.
Ghostbusters will open in U.S. theaters on July 15th, 2016.
