Ghostbusters director Jason Reitman will be attending the Ghostbusters Fan Fest in June. The Ghostbusters franchise has grown to such a degree since its initial release in 1984 that it’s now reached the point where it’s one of the few film franchises to have its very own large-scale fan fest.
The announcement earlier this year that Reitman would be directing a new Ghostbusters film has suddenly catapulted the supernatural comedy IP back into the limelight once more. This time around, however, the new Ghostbusters film will be part of the original cannon, making it the follow up to 1989’s Ghostbusters II. For years fans had been hoping for a third installment in the popular series, and when it was announced back in 2014 that a third film would be made, only to later reveal that it would be a reboot, many die-hard Ghostbusters fans were not at all pleased. This time, the fact that the next Ghostbusters will be directed by Reitman, son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, is already encouraging news to many.
Another encouraging prospect for Ghostbusters fans is the attendance by Jason Reitman at this year’s Ghostbusters Fan Fest in Los Angeles. According to a press release from Wizard World – the company behind the event, Reitman will appear alongside two of the original Ghostbusters - Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson. In addition to this line-up, Reitman’s father (and producer of the new film), Ivan, will join the festivities and Wizard World has promised “several other stars from across the franchise” to also be in attendance during the event this June.
Though it’s still relatively early days with regard to the Ghostbusters Fan Fest, the event does sound as though it will be of great interest to fans. Reitman has already teased potential insight into his upcoming Ghostbusters film at the event, saying: “I am thrilled that my role of Brownstone Boy #2 will finally be given proper recognition. Might also chat about the upcoming Ghostbusters film.” The reference to Brownstone Boy #2, of course, is to the brief cameo that Reitman had as a particularly obnoxious child at a birthday party in Ghostbusters II. Other treats in store for fans will be an appearance and performance from Ray Parker Jr, the musician behind the franchise’s iconic theme song, as well as appearances from the stars of the animated series The Real Ghostbusters, Maurice LaMarche, Frank Welker and Dave Coulier. If all of that isn’t enough to justify the $149 general admission (or the $1499 VIP experience), there will also be film screenings, interactive photo booths, laser tag, exhibitor booths, meetups and much more.
Now that a third film is officially on the way, the Ghostbusters franchise is likely to experience a new upsurge in its popularity. Some fans (and even an actor or two) are not happy that this latest Reitman project is going ahead when an all-female reboot was made so recently. And while it’s odd that the series branched out into a different style with the female led reboot, only to come back to the original formula plus a teen cast, real Ghostbusters fans should be glad to see experimentation with a concept that was arguably in need of a new angle.
