Ghostbusters 2020 producer, Ivan Reitman shares new details about Paul Rudd’s role in the forthcoming sequel film. Reitman is the original director of both 1984’s Ghostbusters and 1989’s Ghostbusters II, and now his filmmaker son, Jason Reitman is helming Ghostbusters 2020 - a direct continuation of those earlier films that follows a new generation as they inherit the proton packs.
From the original Ghostbusters film, Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, and Dan Akroyd will all have some involvement with Ghostbusters 2020, presumably returning in some capacity as their original characters. Annie Potts has also expressed interested at returning, and Ernie Hudson recently revealed he’ll be reprising his role, too. Jason Reitman calls Ghostbusters 2020 a love-letter to those original films, and the involvement of the previous cast members certainly backs that up. Still, they aren’t the stars or focus of Ghostbusters 2020. The film stars Mckenna Grace (Annabelle Comes Home) and Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) as siblings, The Leftovers’ Carrie Coon as their mother, and they’ll play a family living in a small town who soon find themselves tangling with something strange in the neighborhood. Ghostbusters 2020 will also star Paul Rudd, and some recent comments of Ivan Reitman’s reveal more about his role in the film.
Speaking with ET Online during an appearance alongside Dan Akroyd for Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood, Reitman described Rudd’s Ghostbusters 2020 character as “a seismologist who’s come to this small town because they’ve been having mysterious earthquakes.” He also added that Rudd’s character will be teaching summer school, which is likely how he comes in contact with either Grace’s and/or Wolfhard’s characters.
Little is known about Ghostbusters 2020’s story beyond those scant character and setting details, but this description of Rudd’s character as a seismologist who becomes involved after studying strange earthquakes might offer some hints. For instance, his working as a summer school teacher now reads like a cover story, one used to obscure the real reason Rudd’s character comes to town. It’s possible, then, that Rudd’s seismologist is investigating these earthquakes and later discovers their connection to some ghosts. Though, perhaps Rudd is already himself a Ghostbuster with a focus in seismology and how it relates to busting ghosts? It’s hard to say, but it’s clear Rudd is playing a character who is comes from outside this small town, and that suggests the potential for some initial animosity between him and the film’s main family.
With Ghostbusters 2020 currently filming, it’s only a matter of time before more concrete details about the film’s story and characters is released. Seeing as the film is set to release next July, it’s possible that a teaser trailer could even debut sometime this holiday season or early next year. Either way, it won’t be too long before we know more about Ghostbusters 2020 and how it hopes to pass on the ghost-busting tradition to a new generation.
