Jordan Peele has no intention of making a sequel to Get Out, according to producer and Blumhouse Productions founder Jason Blum. Released in 2017, Get Out served as Peele’s directorial debut. The film followed the character of Chris Washington, played by Daniel Kaluuya, as he prepares to meet his girlfriend’s family for the first time. While he’s assured that he has nothing to worry about, Chris still feels a little out of place as a black man in a mostly white environment. It doesn’t take long for Chris’ worries to manifest, with the protagonist finding himself in a strange and terrifying predicament. A blend of horror and social commentary, Get Out ended up as one of the most successful films of the year.

The film, which Peele also wrote, had a minuscule budget of $4.5 million. It ultimately reached more than $255 million at the worldwide box office. Get Out received a similarly rapturous response from critics, represented in reviews which praised Peele’s feature for its incisive humor and lingering tension. Essayists, likewise, grappled with the movie. They considered the influences of Get Out, in addition to the ideas and themes it addressed. In a rarity for a horror movie, Get Out was nominated for several prestigious prizes. At the 90th Academy Awards, the film was up for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay. Peele won in the latter category.

Given the level of Get Out’s achievement, and the fact that it’s widely regarded as one of the most important movies of the last decade, it’s no surprise that talk of a sequel continues to bubble the surface every now and then. According to the film’s producer Jason Blum, audiences shouldn’t be expecting a followup anytime soon. While speaking to Observer recently, Blum walked back comments he made in 2018; in which he teased the possibility of a second installment.

The Blumhouse founder referred to his past comments as “wishful thinking.” Blum added that he would love a sequel, and stressed how his position on that hasn’t changed, but he would only want to revisit the story if Peele is involved. Blum concludes, ultimately, that Peele has no intention of working on a sequel.

It’s worth noting that Peele himself has admitted he’s tempted to revisit Chris Washington’s world, citing the loose ends of Get Out. Peele seems more invested right now in bringing new and original stories like Us to the screen, passing on Akira for precisely this preference. But, down the line, if the right idea strikes, it’s not entirely out of the question that the acclaimed director would revisit the social horror film that has already left such an indelible mark on cinema.
