The 77th Golden Globes had its first-ever vegan menu. The decision was made by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the non-profit organization in charge of the Golden Globes. Eleven chefs, 50 bartenders, 120 culinary staffers, 160 stewards, and 250 servers created and distributed the revolutionary menu, which was created as a response to the climate crisis. This year’s awards show was attended by 1,300 guests who converged at the Beverly Hilton hotel....

David Pogue, in his review of Google’s new Google Maps application for iPhone and iPod touch, shares a couple of interesting tidbits from Google. First, Google reportedly has admitted that its iOS Google Maps application is better than its implementation on Android devices: While the version for iOS takes much of the Android version’s functionality, it does still lack offline mode and full-tablet support. After noting the lack of offline map saving and iPad support, Pogue shares that Google said “that goodies like those will be coming soon....

With Chrome 108, Google is introducing Memory Saver and Energy Saver modes to improve the browser’s performance and extend battery life, respectively. In Settings, you’ll see a new “Performance” menu in the sidebar. The Memory Saver “frees up memory from inactive tabs” so that active websites have the “smoothest possible experience” and other running apps get “more computer resources.” In the address bar, at the right, Chrome will note when “Memory Saver is on” with a speed dial icon....

Google today announced on its Official Android Blog that it’s launching a brand new tool called ‘Android Device Manager’ that will let users easily locate and remotely wipe misplaced or stolen devices. Anyone familiar with the Find My iPhone feature that Apple has made available to iOS device users will already be quite familiar with how the software works. Much like Apple’s service, Android Device Manager will let users locate their device on a Map in real-time, as well as remotely wipe the device of all data if happens to get into the wrong hands....

The new ad format has launched in the US and aims to help car sellers reach potential buyers more easily via Search from a smartphone. Google plans to roll the format out in more countries soon. Google launched the ad format at the National Automobile Dealers Association last week. Google commissioned research firm Kantar for its 2021 GearShift study and found that 16% of new car buyers bought their car online, up from 1% three years ago....

To mark the 15th anniversary of Street View, Google Maps is rolling out a slew of features including the ability to view historical data on Android and iOS, as well as a new camera system. Google Maps on the web introduced the ability to see older Street View captures in 2014. This ability to “travel back in time” is now coming to the Android and iOS app. Upon launch, there will be a “See more dates” button that opens a carousel of older captures for that location....

Although Star Wars: The Force Awakens was heralded as the return of the franchise after a ten-year hiatus following Revenge of the Sith, it wasn’t as if the Star Wars brand was dormant for all that time. Just as things had been before the prequel films, there were countless books, comics, video games and more that expanded the galaxy far, far away in all manner of directions. Biggest of all was Clone Wars, the CGI animated TV series; starting in 2008 with a feature pilot released in theaters (so beating Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to the punch by the better part of a decade), it ran for an impressive six seasons and for a while was the key focus of Star Wars fandom....

It appears that Germany, Switzerland, Latvia, and Estonia are four of the 22 countries to adopt the Apple/Google API for their coronavirus contact-tracing apps … A Reuters report confirms that Latvia is doing so. Germany had already decided to do so, a U-turn from its previous position. The Reuters report also implies that Switzerland and Estonia are doing the same, though does not explicitly say so. Latvia’s Apturi Covid (Stop Covid) app is […] based on technology launched last week by Apple and Google, whose iOS and Android operating systems run 99% of the world’s smartphones....

2016 wasn’t a great year for Paramount Pictures at the box office, what with the latest movie installments in such Paramount franchises as Star Trek, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Jack Reacher all performing below commercial expectations (though Arrival was a high note for the studio). Paramount is looking to reverse its fortunes in 2017 with movies such as the Dwayne Johnson-led Baywatch reboot and Michael Bay’s latest Transformers film, Transformers: The Last Knight, as well as this March’s live-action Ghost in the Shell anime/manga film adaptation, starring Scarlett Johansson....

Ghostbusters 2020 is officially done filming. The successful comedy-horror franchise has been through a lot over the past few years, and with Juno director Jason Reitman now at the helm of a new entry into the mythology, fans are primed for more. Aside from being an Oscar-nominated director, Reitman is also the son of Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two Ghostbusters movies. A third film in the series was seemingly on the mind of every Ghostbusters fan from the instant that Ghostbusters II ended its theatrical run some thirty years ago....

In 2018 alone he lent his voice to not one but two projects, Imagination’s The Grinch, and Netflix’s Jungle Book adaptation Mowgli, directed by fellow Hobbit co-star Andy Serkis - not to mention reprising his role as Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange, in the Marvel blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War and the 5-part limited series Patrick Melrose for Showtime. Dark Mode is becoming a feature that all users love to use in apps on their phones. It is even useful as it reduces stress in the eyes while using phones in low light. Google has launched YouTube Capture for iOS on the iTunes App Store this afternoon, allowing users to upload video “in as few as 3 clicks.” The folks at YouTube released the app to make it easier for users to film and upload video to YouTube, as the app allows for video to be filmed from right within the app, uploaded, and shared to Google+, Facebook, and Twitter. Besides the speed, the app is also welcomed because it offers an easier way to upload videos than iOS’ finicky uploader does....

But what kind of download numbers did Google Maps receive? From his Google+ account, Google’s Senior Vice President of Commerce and Local, Jeff Huber, announced that after just 48 hours, the Google Maps iOS App received over 10 million downloads. As of this writing, Google Maps is still sitting atop the App Store’s Top Charts in the Free category along with “ElfYourSelf,” “Fun Run – Multiplayer Race” and the fourth application being another Google-owned app, YouTube....

Nowhere are the words “story” and “continuity” used more interchangeably than DC Comics, which has engaged in a fairly regular series of reboots and relaunches since the mid-1980s - via a series of events collective referred to as Crises. So while many fans were upset to see the company effectively wipe its continuity clean (again) for the controversial New 52 initiative, many more opted to take it in stride assuming that a revival-reboot was an inevitability - with news of an upcoming event titled Rebirth seeming to confirm their conjecture....
