GM’s autonomous driving division, Cruise Automation, announced the launch of the beta version of its autonomous ride-sharing app currently being used by employees in San Francisco, where they operate a fleet of autonomous Chevy Bolt EV test vehicles. The new service is called ‘Cruise Anywhere’ and the company claims that it is already becoming the primary mode of transport for some of its employees. Google hasn’t updated the vast majority of its iOS services since December. Those apps are now throwing up “This app is out of date” messages when attempting a Google sign-in. Update: About an hour after this issue came to light, Google removed the warning. All sign-in attempts immediately proceed to the password entry field. This warning (spotted by Spencer Dailey) appears after you enter your email address in apps that have not seen an update since mid-December....

What did Google do, exactly? Well, according to Bloomberg BusinessWeek, quoting a person familiar with the matter, Google used cookies that went over Safari’s tracking blocker preferences in order to track users between sites and deliver them targeted advertising. Google (of course) denied any wrongdoing in a statement, saying that the FTC’s focus was on a 2009 help center page, which has been changed since. The editor in chief of Germany’s biggest newspaper, Süddeutsche Zeitung, has written an open letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook in which he claims that Apple pays ‘between 1 and 7 percent’ tax on its overseas income. Wolfgang Krach says the numbers were reached by its analysis of the so-called paradise papers, a massive leak of financial records relating to offshore holdings in countries commonly used as tax havens. Google is kicking off its annual Google I/O developer conference today with the event’s opening keynote presentation and during had several announcements for not just Android but also iOS and Mac users. Among the announcements so far today, Google Assistant is expanding to more languages, in addition to coming to iOS with a standalone iPhone app. Google Home is coming to new countries and languages and also getting a bunch of new features ahead of an expected unveiling for Apple’s Siri Speaker competitor....

The all-cash acquisition will see Mandiant join Google Cloud and deliver an end-to-end security operations suite, as well as advisory services to help customers address critical security challenges and stay protected. The deal will also bring Mandiant’s threat detection and intelligence service, along with testing and validation services under Google Cloud’s umbrella. “Cybersecurity is a mission, and we believe it’s one of the most important of our generation. Earlier today, we reported that Waze has started beta testing CarPlay integration. Now, someone has posted screenshots of the Google Maps app in beta, which features CarPlay integration (a new feature available in iOS 12). iOS 12 third-party navigation apps use a base layer that is rendered by the app, overlaid with standard CarPlay controls. You can see how that works in the screenshots below. As shown in these screenshots, the Google Maps app icon takes the navigation slot on the sidebar, which until iOS 12 could only be occupied by the Apple Maps app....

Since the new OS X Mavericks is just a few days old, bugs and incompatible applications are to be expected until developers have time to run through the new APIs and patch up their apps.
