Google added a fun Easter egg for the original Sonic the Hedgehog video game, tying into the upcoming live-action adaptation. Update (September 12th):Eric Schmidt went on record saying:“We haven’t done anything yet with Google Maps,” Schmidt told reporters in Tokyo today. Apple would “have to approve it. It’s their choice,” Schmidt said, declining to say if the Mountain View, California-based company submitted an application to Apple for sale through its App Store. Google’s 2018 I/O developer conference has begun today and the company has announced a slew of new features and updates for its software and services. Among the most interesting features are impressive updates to Google Assistant and a new Digital Wellbeing dashboard, putting more pressure on Apple to deliver in these areas. First up, Siri’s competitor, Google Assistant is getting some sharp new capabilities, and putting even more pressure on Apple to give its AI some serious upgrades....

The feature works by translating a language spoken by one user into captions in another language. That’s a handy feature for multinational organizations who hold meetings across different language groups, especially when online video meetings are now a must-have for many. The beta, launched in September, supported English meetings translated to Spanish, French, Portuguese and German. Back in 2020, Nvidia declared its intention to purchase chip designer Arm from its owner Softbank for $40 billion. Nearly a year and a half later, Nvidia is reportedly backing out of the deal due to regulatory obstacles. Apple relies on Arm’s instruction set to fabricate custom processors used in iPhones, iPads, and Macs, although the deal likely wouldn’t have affected this arrangement. If the acquisition were approved, Nvidia promised to “continue to operate [Arm’s] open-licensing model while maintaining the global customer neutrality that has been foundational to its success....

Google executives are now on-stage for the second day of Google I/O to announce Google Drive’s launch on iOS today. Director of Google Apps Product Management Clay Bavor first showed off real-time collaboration. He also demonstrated image recognition and searching with Optical Character Recognition, which lets users convert images with text into text documents. Using Google Drive on iOS, Bavor searched for “pyramid.” He then received a personal picture from a vacation—even though it was not titled....

Bloomberg reports that the Berlin Regional Court in Germany has told Apple to change its policies for managing customer’s data on its website after ruling that Apple’s terms for data use go against German laws. According to a statement posted by a German consumer group Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband (VSBV), the courts have ruled that Apple cannot request “global consent” for use of a customer’s data” without informing the user of where and how the data will be used....
